2026 Rome Travel Cost Study

Is Rome expensive?

Rome is mid-priced for a European capital, not cheap: our calculator comes to about €1,199 for two people on a mid-range trip of 4 nights, not counting flights. That is about €150 per person per night. Across Italy, eating out and hotels cost 106.9 % of the EU average (Eurostat), less than France and Germany but more than Spain.

Short answer

Somewhat. Across Italy, eating out and hotels cost 106.9 % of the EU average (Eurostat, 2024, a national figure), a bit below France and Germany. In Rome itself the hotel is the largest single cost, and the prices we read differ a lot by month. Our default trip of 4 nights for two at mid-range comes to about €1,199: €452 for the hotel, €400 for meals out and €163 for a Colosseum tour and a Vatican ticket at their lowest listed prices.

How to spend less in Rome

  • Come in January. In our sample, the median 4-star price for January nights was €76 (47 prices). For May it was €215 (39 prices). Google shows a different mix of hotels on each date, so part of the gap is the hotel mix.
  • A 3-star hotel is often enough. Across the 11 sampled months, 3-star rooms cost a median €81 a night, against €113 at 4-star.
  • Tuesday was cheaper than Saturday at 5-star. At 5-star hotels, the same room cost a median 6.8 % more for a Saturday night than for the Tuesday night before it (301 pairs). At 4-star hotels we found no Saturday premium. We did not price other weekdays.
  • Eat where Romans eat lunch. Published prices point to about €10 for a simple lunch and €25 for a trattoria meal. The sources range from €5 to €40, as the table shows. Espresso at the bar is listed at €0.90 to €1.
  • Buy a plain transit pass first. The 72-hour ATAC pass costs €22. The 72-hour Roma Pass costs €63, so it only pays off if you use its museum entries.
  • Mix paid sights with free ones. A Vatican Museums ticket or tour has a median from-price of €47. St. Peter's Basilica, the big squares and many churches with famous art cost nothing.

Flights are not part of this study. All totals cover what you spend once you land in Rome.

What a Rome trip costs for two

At mid-range, a trip for two comes to about €954 for 3 nights in Rome, €1,444 for 5 nights and €1,934 for 7 nights.

Each style row is the same trip of 4 nights for two. The hotel is the median price for the star class across the 11 sampled months. Food is two meals out per person per day. Every row adds a Colosseum tour and a Vatican ticket at their lowest listed prices, a daily transit pass, the airport train both ways and the tourist tax. The tax is at the 4-star rate in every row. The city's table charges less at 3-star and more at 5-star.

Rome hotel prices by month

In our sample, a hotel room for two in Rome cost a median €81 a night at 3-star, €113 at 4-star and €445 at 5-star.

On 25 October 2026 we read 2,156 nightly prices of 472 hotels on Google Hotels, for stays from November 2026 to September 2027. Each price is for one room and two adults. We left out 12 hostels and campsites. The prices come from Google's list of up to 60 hotels per night, not from every hotel in Rome. A 3-star month rests on 32 to 54 prices, a 4-star month on 39 to 50. The 5-star figures come from a separate 5-star search. We did not check whether prices include taxes or breakfast.

About these numbers

Medians per room per night for 2 adults, as Google Hotels listed them. Each month rests on one Tuesday and one Saturday night. We read the months 23 to 324 days ahead. October is not in the sample. “Cheapest” and “dearest” mean the lowest and highest median in this sample.

Saturday against Tuesday

3-star +4.4% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 85 pairs
4-star 0% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 89 pairs
5-star +6.8% median Saturday price against the Tuesday before, 301 pairs
How we compared weekends

For each pair, we priced one hotel for a Saturday night and for the Tuesday before it. Saturdays cost a median 4.4 % more at 3-star and 6.8 % more at 5-star. At 4-star the median difference was 0 %.

Hotels worth a look (ratings from Booking.com)

These hotels rate 8 or more on Booking.com. Where our sample holds no price for a hotel, we show none. Where you stay changes the price. In our sample, a 4-star room for two cost a median €189 a night in the historic centre, €143 in Termini and Monti and €90 outside the centre. Each area has its own mix of hotels, so this shows where Google's list was cheaper, not the same room for less. We placed each hotel by its map position, so the areas are rough. The centre rests on 63 prices from 29 hotels. Prati, by the Vatican, had too few 4-star prices to compare. The centre lets you walk to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Termini has the main station and the airport train. Further out, pick a hotel near a metro stop. Our guide to where to stay in Rome lists well-rated hotels in each area.

Free things to do in Rome

Many of Rome's best sights cost nothing: St. Peter's Basilica, the great squares, the parks and many churches full of famous art.

  • Free St. Peter's Basilica

Entry to the church is free. Expect a security line. The climb to the dome costs extra.

  • Free Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps

Two of the city's great public spaces. You may walk the Spanish Steps, but city rules ban sitting on them.

  • Free San Luigi dei Francesi

This church near Piazza Navona holds three paintings by Caravaggio, and entry is free.

  • Free Villa Borghese gardens

The park is free to walk. The Borghese Gallery inside it is not, and it needs a booking.

  • Free The Janiculum hill

A short climb from Trastevere gives a wide view over the domes of the old center.

  • Free, last Sunday of the month Vatican Museums

Entry is free on that morning, but not on some holidays. Lines are very long, so check the official hours before you go, or pay on another day.

How much a rental car costs in Rome

Rental and travel sites put the average rental car in Rome at €24 to €76 a day.

Budget €24 a day, lowest published average
Mid-range €44 a day, median of 3 published figures
Comfort €76 a day, highest published average

These figures are cited from 3 rental and travel sites, not measured by us. Each site uses its own basis. Budget is the lowest published average, mid-range the median and comfort the highest. A published range counts with its midpoint, so the budget €24 is the midpoint of a €17 to €30 range. The calculator adds €44 a day for a mid-range car.

  • €17–€30 a day: average prices around €17–€30 per day vivastour.com
  • €44 a day: middle Average price. €44.10 per day economybookings.com
  • €76 a day: On average, car rentals in Rome cost around €76 per day roadgenius.com

You do not need a car inside Rome. Much of the center is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) where cars without a permit get fined. A car helps for day trips from Rome into the countryside.

Tourist tax, transit passes and the airport train

Tourist tax €7.50 per person per night at a 4-star hotel, for at most 10 nights, from an older city rate table · city of Rome (Roma Capitale), read 25 October 2026

Airport train, one way €14 per person, Leonardo Express from Fiumicino airport to Termini station · Trenitalia, read 25 October 2026

The calculator uses the 4-star rate for every style. Rome charges less per night at simpler hotels and more at 5-star hotels. The rate table we found is not this year's, so the rate may have changed. Ask your hotel for its current rate.

Is the Roma Pass worth it?

Only if you visit paid museums. The 72-hour Roma Pass costs €63, while the ATAC 72-hour ticket costs €22. Your first two entries must be worth more than €41 together to make up the difference. After those, the pass gives a discount, not free entry.

72 hours €63 €22 72-hour ticket €41

The 72-hour pass includes your first two museum or site entries, the 48-hour pass your first one. Check which sites take it before you buy.

Key findings of the 2026 Rome Travel Cost Study

  1. Restaurant and hotel prices across Italy were 106.9 % of the EU average in 2024, according to Eurostat's price level index (EU = 100). This is a national figure, not Rome alone.
  2. In our sample of 2,156 Google Hotels hotel-night prices from two searches (the main search and one filtered to 5-star hotels; 472 hotels, stays from November 2026 to September 2027, hostels and campsites left out), a 4-star night in Rome cost a median €113 per room for two adults (495 prices), with the middle half between €79 and €178. A 3-star night cost a median €81 (442 prices); a 5-star night, from the 5-star search, €445 (768 prices).
  3. Across the 11 months we sampled (one Tuesday and one Saturday each), the median 4-star price was highest for May 2027 nights, at €215 a night, and lowest for January 2027, at €76. Google lists a different mix of hotels for each date, so part of that gap is the hotel mix, not only the season. All prices were read on 25 October 2026, months ahead of the stay.
  4. Comparing the same hotel on a Saturday and the Tuesday before it (one Tuesday and one Saturday per month, only hotels priced on both dates), 3-star hotels charged a median 4.4 % more on the Saturday (85 pairs) and 5-star hotels 6.8 % more (301 pairs), while 4-star hotels showed no Saturday premium (median difference 0 %, 89 pairs).
  5. Travel guides and food-tour companies publish prices of €5 to €20 for a cheap meal and €12 to €40 per person for a sit-down meal at a trattoria or mid-range restaurant; restaurant booking sites list €90 and €180 per person at two fine-dining restaurants.
  6. Published average prices for a rental car in Rome disagree widely: 3 car-rental and travel sites state average daily prices that range from €24 to €76 (a stated range counted at its midpoint), on different bases (a typical compact car, a general average). The real price depends on the dates, the car, insurance and fuel.
  7. Our calculator puts a mid-range trip of 4 nights for two at about €1,199: one shared 4-star room at its median across the sampled months, two meals out a day each, two tours at their from-prices, a daily public-transport pass, the airport train both ways and the tourist tax at the 4-star rate. Flights, breakfast and drinks are not included.

Method, data and reuse

What we measured ourselves

  • Hotels: 2,156 prices of 472 hotels on Google Hotels, read on 25 October 2026. One Tuesday and one Saturday night per month, November 2026 to September 2027, 2 adults, one room; paid ads, listings without a price and duplicates left out. These are the prices advertised for those dates when we read them, not what guests later paid. Months are compared within a star class because Google shows a different set of hotels for each date. Star classes: Google's default hotel list for Rome (depth 60) held only 4-9 priced 5-star prices in 7 of 11 months, too few to compare months within the 5-star class; so we added one extra Google Hotels search per night filtered to 5-star (depth 20; Google returned 36 listings, 31-36 priced 5-star hotels per night), same dates, 2 adults, one room; only hotels Google labels 5-star are kept (768 of the 2,156 prices). These count for the 5-star figures only, from the filtered rows alone in every month (main-search 5-star rows stay in the all-hotel figures); the all-hotel figures, the 3- and 4-star figures and month sample sizes use the main search alone: the all-hotel median rests on 1,388 prices.
  • Activities: the "from" prices of the 129 tours and tickets on our 21 activity pages (the table above), as shown on GetYourGuide on 25 October 2026; the calculator offers 12 tours, one per activity page. A "from" price is the lowest option a listing offers, not a typical price.

What we cite

  • Meals, drinks and car hire: figures published by travel guides, food-tour companies and rental platforms, found through Google searches for Rome prices and quoted word for word with their date. A range counts with its midpoint, each source once per group. No figures from forums or social media. Pages that show a date are from after 2022, except the trattoria meal and glass of wine figures, from 2018 and 2020; many pages show no date at all.
  • Tourist tax, fares and the Roma Pass: the city of Rome (Roma Capitale), ATAC and Musei in Comune di Roma.
  • Price level: Eurostat, price level index for restaurants and hotels (EU = 100), 2024.

How the calculator adds up

  • Months, rooms and days: “Average of the sampled months” is the median of the 11 months we sampled, November 2026 to September 2027; October is not in the sample. Rooms are one per two travellers, rounded up, and all travellers count as adults. Days are counted as nights, so a stay of 4 nights gets 4 days of food and transport.
  • Hotel: nights × rooms (one per two travellers) × the median for the style's star class in that month (or the whole year).
  • Eating out: nights × travellers × meals a day at the style's meal price; in comfort, one fine dinner a day and the other meals at mid-range prices.
  • Car: days × the style's daily price. Activities: the from-price per person or per group.
  • Tourist tax: travellers × nights (at most 10) × €7.50; every traveller counted (children too; ask your hotel whether children pay).
  • Transport: nights × travellers × the 24-hour pass (€8.50). A pass every day is our assumption, not the cheapest choice for everyone. Airport: two Leonardo Express rides per traveller between Fiumicino and Termini (€14 each, one there and one back), counted on their own, so arrival and departure days may count a ride twice. Ciampino airport and other trains are not covered.

Each line is rounded to whole euros.

Somewhat. Across Italy, eating out and hotels cost 106.9 % of the EU average, a little less than in France. In Rome, the hotel is the biggest cost. A 4-star room cost a median €113 a night in our sample, and much less in January.

How much does a trip to Rome cost?

For two people at mid-range, the calculator comes to about €954 for 3 nights, €1,444 for 5 nights and €1,934 for 7 nights. That covers a shared 4-star room, two meals out a day each, two tours, transit and the airport train. Flights are extra. Leave out the hotel, and a mid-range day costs about €93 per person, with the tickets and the airport train spread over the stay.

How much does food cost in Rome per day?

At mid-range, plan on two trattoria meals a day at about €25 each per person. On a tight budget, a cheap meal costs about €10. An espresso at the bar costs about €0.95.

How can I do Rome on a budget?

Pick a 3-star hotel (median €81 a night in our sample), come in the cheaper months, eat simple lunches and use the free sights. A budget trip of 4 nights for two comes to about €831.

Which month has the lowest hotel prices in Rome?

In our sample, 4-star rooms were cheapest in January, at a median €76 a night. For 3-star rooms, November, December and January were close, at €59, €62 and €60. The priciest month for 4-star rooms was May. Hotels are only one part of a trip's cost. In May, the dearest month in our sample, the mid-range trip of 4 nights for two comes to about €1,607, or €201 per person per night. In January it is €1,051.

Is the Roma Pass worth it?

Only if you visit paid museums. The 72-hour pass costs €63, and the ATAC 72-hour ticket costs €22. Your first two entries must be worth more than €41 together. After those, the pass gives a discount, not free entry.
