Christmas in Rome: Open Sights and Prices

A lit Christmas tree in front of the Vittoriano monument in Rome at night

Christmas in Rome is worth the trip if you book your big sights early and plan around the days when they close. Many sights shut on 25 December and the Vatican Museums also shut on 26 December. This guide shows what is open, how cold to expect it, what a December hotel night costs and which indoor sights fit short winter days.

Christmas in Rome: is it worth the trip?

Yes, Christmas in Rome is worth it if you accept short days and a few closed sights. Hotels cost far less than in the priciest month, and the big museums stay open on most other days. The catch is 25 December, when the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Borghese Gallery are all closed. The Vatican Museums close on 25 and 26 December, too. The St Peter's Basilica hours page lists no closure date, but we found no page that confirms its hours on 25 December, so check it before you go. The Trevi Fountain also stays open.

If you want a warm, long-day trip, pick another month. Our guide on whether Rome is worth visiting compares the seasons. For this trip, plan indoor sights for the middle of the day, and keep the evening for walking and eating.

Key Takeaway Christmas in Rome means 3 sights closed on 25 December, the Vatican Museums closed on 25 and 26 December, and winter closing times that start at 16:30 at the Colosseum. Book early and plan around those dates.

How cold is Rome at Christmas?

We could not confirm an official temperature range for late December. No official page we could read gives December averages, so we give no number. The Aeronautica Militare pages we opened show short forecasts for Fiumicino, not monthly averages. The Turismo Roma pages we opened give no temperatures either. Check the Aeronautica Militare forecast a week before you fly.

Plan for cold weather. Pack layers, a rain jacket and shoes that dry fast. Many sights are outdoors, such as the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and St Peter's Square. Daylight is short, and the Colosseum closes at 16:30 until 28 February 2027.

What is open and closed at Christmas in Rome

Most big sights close on 25 December and 1 January, and the Vatican Museums close on a few more days. The table lists the dates each official page gives. Hours can change, so check again before you go.

The Vatican Museums list their closed dates on their own page. They are open on the last Sunday of the month, free, from 9:00 to 14:00. That Sunday moves when it falls on 25, 26 or 31 December. The Colosseum site says tickets go on sale 30 days before your visit. The Pantheon page lists the 25 December and 1 January closures. The Borghese Gallery says every ticket needs a reservation.

Christmas events and the most Christmassy place in Rome

The most Christmassy place in Rome is the Vatican area, because two Christmas Mass listings name the Vatican. We found no official ranking of Christmassy places in Italy, so we do not name a winner for the whole country. The official St Peter's Basilica page lists its winter hours, 7:00 to 19:00 until 28 March 2027.

Two GetYourGuide listings are titled Christmas Mass with Pope Leo XIV. Both show a price of €1,800 and no reviews, so we do not pick them. No official page we could read says how ordinary visitors get a place at those services. Treat any seat that you find through a third party with care.

Things to Do in Rome's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 15 tours with Christmas or New Year in the title, from €21. Only one of them has a good rating and at least 50 reviews, the Christmas opera concert with an Italian aperitivo. It is run by Rome Opera Concerts, takes 75 minutes and is from €42 per person. It is rated 4.7 from 58 reviews, and the listing offers free cancellation. It is not suitable for children under 6. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the concert starts at 7:30 pm. The meeting point is the Chiesa Evangelica Metodista, Via Firenze 38, and the listing gives no group size. It includes the ticket, 1 drink and snacks; it excludes the concert CD and hotel pickup.

No official page lists the dates of Rome's 2026 Christmas markets yet, so we do not list them. The programme was not yet on the official tourism site on 25 October 2026. For a guide to what usually happens, the official tourism site's 2025-26 page listed a 25 m tree in St Peter's Square, a 12 m tree on the Spanish Steps and lights on Via del Corso and Via dei Condotti from 26 November 2025 to 6 January 2026. The other trees, nativity scenes and street lights on that page carry no separate dates, only the season of 26 November to 6 January. It also listed "100 Nativity Scenes in the Vatican", from 8 December to 6 January below the colonnade, and nativity scenes in churches such as Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Maria in Ara Coeli. These are last season's dates, and the 2026 ones may differ. The city also reported that the Piazza Navona festival of 2025-26 drew up to 7,000 people on holidays and their eves.

What a December trip costs in Rome

A December hotel night in Rome costs far less than in the busiest month. In December, a 4-star hotel night in Rome cost a median €79 per room for two, against €215 in May 2027, the priciest month for 4-star rooms, in the 2026 Rome Travel Cost Study. The study does not say which December dates it covered, so book early for Christmas week. We found no official crowd figures for Rome at Christmas, apart from the Piazza Navona number above, and the study gives no New Year prices.

Add the city's tourist tax. For a 4-star hotel, Roma Capitale sets it at €7.50 per person per night, up to 10 nights.

Near the Vatican, the Orazio Palace Hotel is a modern hotel with a garden in Prati. In the centre, the FOUR Suites Pantheon is a guest house near Campo de' Fiori. Near the Colosseum, the Hotel Forum sits in Monti, 500 metres from Colosseo metro. Our where to stay in Rome page compares the areas, and the Rome neighbourhoods guide explains them.

Indoor sights for cold or wet days

Pick the Vatican Museums and the Borghese Gallery for a cold day. Both are indoors and both have a guided option.

The official Vatican Museums ticket is €20 at the door, and €25 online with skip-the-line booking. Dress rules apply: no sleeveless tops, no shorts above the knee and no hats. You can do it yourself with that ticket, and it costs less. A guided option helps if you want the story told and a plan for the huge building, so pick the tour only if you value that. The Vatican skip-the-line tour is run by Made in Rome Tours, takes 3 hours and is from €75 per person. It is rated 4.6 from 11,823 reviews, the listing offers free cancellation, and it is not suitable for wheelchair users. It includes a guide, guaranteed skip-the-line access and entry to the museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica, but not tips. The meeting point is Via Plauto 17, and the listing shows no group size and no hotel pickup. Our page on a tour of the Vatican compares the options.

The Borghese Gallery works well on a wet afternoon. Visits run in 2-hour slots, and a reservation is required, which you can make yourself on the gallery's official page. A tour mainly adds a guide, so book the gallery yourself if you only want entry. The Borghese Gallery guided tour is run by Doooing, takes 2 hours and is from €95 per person. It is rated 4.9 from 1,019 reviews and includes entry, skip-the-line access and headsets if needed. The meeting point is Piazzale del Museo Borghese, and group size depends on the option: up to 5 people for the small group or up to 15 for the standard group. It excludes hotel pickup, food and drinks, and tips. The listing offers free cancellation and is not suitable for wheelchair users.

On a cold evening, the pasta and tiramisu class near the Spanish Steps is run by Cheforaday and takes 2 hours. It is from €45 per person, rated 4.8 from 2,203 reviews, with free cancellation. The meeting point is Trattoria Amici, Via della Croce 34, and groups are up to 20 people. It includes the class, pasta, wine or a soft drink, tiramisu and a limoncello toast; extra food, extra drinks, take-away limoncello and tips cost extra. It is not suitable for wheelchair users or vegans. For more food ideas, see our Rome food tours.

Day trips and daylight in winter

Day trips from Rome are possible in winter, but they end early. The Pompeii site opens at 9:00 and closes at 17:00 from 15 October to 15 March, with last entry at 15:30. It is closed on 25 December and 1 January. Our day trips from Rome guide covers more options.

Roman sights such as the Colosseum tours also end early. Start in the morning and book a timed ticket. If the weather is poor, swap the outdoor sights for a museum. The Trevi Fountain stays open, but since 2 February 2026 the basin area closest to the fountain costs €2 to enter, so check the current rule on the Turismo Roma news page.

For the metro, the first trains run at 5:30. The last trains leave at 23:30 Sunday to Thursday, and at 1:30 on Friday and Saturday nights, per the usual timetable. Holiday notices can change this, so check before a late dinner. See also how many days in Rome and our Rome public transport guide.

When Christmas in Rome is the wrong choice

Christmas in Rome is the wrong choice if you want warm weather, long evenings or a lot of outdoor sightseeing. Daylight is short, and some outdoor sights are less pleasant in the rain. It is also the wrong choice if your plan needs a sight that is closed on 25 December, such as the Colosseum or the Vatican Museums. A Christmas Mass is not an easy plan, because we found no official way to book one.

A winter trip works best when the plan has more rooms than squares.

For a trip with a Christmas feel, plan on a few well-chosen things instead of many. A concert, a museum day and a long dinner fill a Christmas week. For safety tips in crowded places, read whether Rome is safe. For a general plan, see our Rome 3 day itinerary and Rome tours.

Is it worth going to Italy over Christmas?

Going to Italy over Christmas can be worth it, if you accept the closures and early dark. Hotel prices are lower. For the whole country, we only have the Rome facts above, so we cannot rank other towns.
