The catacombs at Rome: what they are

The catacombs at Rome are early Christian burial tunnels, about 2,000 years old, says one listing. St. Callixtus and St. Sebastian lie on the Via Appia Antica, the old Appian Way.

Most tours take 2 to 4 hours, but your time underground is much shorter. It is 30 minutes at St. Callixtus on our ticket pick, 40 minutes on the transfer tour and 40 to 45 minutes at San Sebastiano.

You walk narrow, dark passages in a group. To hear the guide, pick a tour with headsets or a small group.

Rome's catacombs of San Callisto

San Callisto (St. Callixtus) is the catacomb most of our picks visit. Its listing calls it the resting place of “an estimated half a million Christians”.

The ticket with a guided tour costs from €14 and lasts 30 minutes. We could not confirm its hours or closed day, because the official site did not load. Check before you go.

The Catacombs of San Sebastiano in Rome

San Sebastiano is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Last entry is 4:45 p.m. It is closed every Monday and for a yearly break, so check the dates.

You can only visit with a guide, for 40 to 45 minutes. Tickets cost €10 on site or €12 online, which includes a €2 fee.

The Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome

Visits to the Catacombs of Priscilla are guided, says its official site. None of our picks goes there, so book on catacombepriscilla.com.

Catacomb tickets in Rome

Official catacomb tickets in Rome start at €10, and the visit includes a guide. On GetYourGuide, a St. Callixtus or St. Sebastian ticket with a guide costs from €14. Tours with transport cost from €45.

Domitilla is open every day except Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Capuchin Crypt

The Capuchin Crypt is a set of chapels decorated with the bones of 4,000 Capuchin monks, says one listing. It is not next to the catacombs, so the combined tours drive you between the sites.

Shoulders and knees must be covered, say the listings.

Capuchin Crypt tickets

We found no official price to quote. Three picks include the crypt: the bus tour, with an audio guide; the private van, with timed entry except on its express option; and the transfer tour, as an add-on. On that tour, the earliest crypt entry is 2:45 p.m. if you do both on one day.

The Appian Way

The Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) is the old Roman road where St. Callixtus and St. Sebastian lie. The walking tour covers part of it and passes the Tomb of Cecilia Metella. The private van drives past it and the Aurelian Walls.

Tips for Rome’s catacombs

  1. What to wear

Cover your shoulders and knees: no shorts or sleeveless tops. Listings say you can be refused entry otherwise.

  2. No photos

Photos are not allowed in the catacombs, say two listings.

  3. Hearing the guide

Groups can be up to 25 or 30. Pick a tour with headsets, like the Appian Way walk, or a small group.

  4. Bring a layer

It is cool underground. The St. Sebastian listing says to bring warm clothes.

  5. Not for everyone

The tunnels are narrow and dark. Most listings say they do not suit people with claustrophobia or wheelchair users.

  6. If your plans change

All six picks offer free cancellation. Check the deadline on each listing before you book.
