Rome Amalfi tours: what a day looks like

A Rome Amalfi tour is a long day. Our picks take 10 to 15 hours, and much of that is on the road. Four of the five also stop at Pompeii.

Read the stops on each listing before you book. A “scenic drive” along the coast is not the same as free time in a town. The table above lists the stops for each tour.

Only want the ruins? See our Pompeii day trips from Rome.

Day trips from Rome to Positano

Two picks take you to Positano. The coach trip drives the coast and stops for free time in Positano.

The van trip names Positano and Amalfi. Its free time, over 3 hours, is in Amalfi. It is the better pick if you want to linger by the sea.

Day trips from Rome to Sorrento

Two picks stop in Sorrento. The budget trip from €69 adds a free drink by the sea in Sorrento after Pompeii.

The private day for up to 4 people visits Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento at your own pace.

Capri day trips from Rome

The Capri day takes a coach from Rome to Naples, then a ferry to the island. Both are included, from €174.

On Capri you are on your own: there is no guide on the island. A tour leader helps on the coach and the ferry. At 15 hours, it is the longest pick.

Private tours from Rome to the Amalfi Coast

The private day costs from €850 for a group of up to 4, with pickup in Rome. An English-speaking driver takes you. The listing names no guide.

Two group trips also sell private options: the coach trip for up to 6 and the van trip for up to 8.

Getting to the Amalfi Coast on your own

On your own, take a fast train from Rome to Naples or Salerno, then a bus or ferry to the coast. The fast train to Naples takes a little over 1 hour.

The regional tourism board says the SITA bus from Salerno to Amalfi takes just over an hour. It says ferries link Salerno, Amalfi and Positano from April to October only. We found no official total time for the trip, so plan a long day both ways.

Our Rome to Amalfi Coast guide explains the trains, ferries and drivers if you want to go on your own. If a 13-hour day is too much, our day trips from Rome list shorter ones.

Want to set your own pace on the coast? You can rent a car at Rome’s main airport and skip the center’s limited traffic zone.

Tips for an Amalfi Coast day from Rome

  1. Count the hours on the road

Our picks run 10 to 15 hours. Pick the shortest day that still has the stop you want.

  2. Read the stops

Check whether the listing says “free time” in a town or only a drive past it.

  3. If your plans change

All five picks offer free cancellation. Check the deadline on each listing before you book.

  4. Ferries run in season

The regional tourism board says coast ferries run from April to October only.

  5. Pack for the sun

Some sites lack shade, says the Positano trip’s listing. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water.

Amalfi Coast tours from Rome: questions and answers

Should I spend my day in Rome or on the Amalfi Coast?

It depends on your trip. On our picks, the coast is a 10 to 15-hour day from Rome and back, and much of it is on the road. With only a few days in Rome, a shorter day trip may suit you better.

Is there a high-speed train from Rome to Amalfi?

No. Fast trains go to Naples or Salerno. From Salerno, the regional tourism board says a SITA bus reaches Amalfi in just over an hour. It says ferries run from April to October.

Can you tour the Amalfi Coast from Naples?

Yes, but all our picks start in Rome. The Capri day takes a ferry from Naples to the island. We list no tours that start in Naples.

When should I avoid an Amalfi Coast day trip?

Skip it if a 12 to 15-hour day is too much for you. Ferries run only from April to October, says the regional tourism board. In summer, some sites lack shade, so bring a hat and water.

Which is better for a day trip, Positano or Amalfi?

Pick by the tour. The coach trip gives you free time in Positano. The van trip gives you over 3 hours in Amalfi.
