The best tours from Rome to Pompeii

The best tour from Rome to Pompeii depends on how much time you want at the ruins. The Pompeii-only day is the shortest at 9 hours. It gives you a guide plus free time on the site.

The coast trips run 10 to 14 hours. They add Positano, Amalfi or Sorrento, so your time at Pompeii is shorter.

Bus tours to Pompeii from Rome

Three picks go by coach from central Rome. The Pompeii-only day and the Positano trip both leave from Piazza del Popolo. The Positano trip takes up to 50 people. It also sells small-group (up to 8) and private (up to 6) options.

Private tours to Pompeii from Rome

The private day takes up to 4 people, with pickup and a driver. Two group trips also sell private options: the Positano trip for up to 6 and the van trip for up to 8.

Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius tours from Rome

None of our five picks goes up Mount Vesuvius. The guided Pompeii day tells the story of the eruption in 79 AD, says its listing.

Day trips from Rome to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast

To see Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day, book a coach or van trip. Three picks do both. The Positano trip gives you free time in Positano. The van trip gives you over 3 hours in Amalfi. The Sorrento trip ends with a drink by the sea.

These are long days of 10 to 14 hours, and much of that is on the road. Pompeii is one of the longest of our day trips from Rome. Tivoli and Ostia Antica are much shorter.

Rome to Pompeii: tour, train or car

A tour is the easiest way from Rome to Pompeii. One booking covers the ride, the ticket and a guide. The train works too, but you plan each step yourself.

  • Fast train to Naples: the Frecciarossa takes a little over 1 hour, says Trenitalia. Over 100 trains run each day.
  • On to Pompeii: from Naples, take a regional train from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi to Pompei, then the Pompei Link bus. Or take the Circumvesuviana’s Naples–Sorrento line to the stop “Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri”.
  • On Sundays: Trenitalia sells one through ticket. It leaves Roma Termini at 8:53 a.m. and changes in Naples. It takes about 1 hour 47 minutes.
  • Check before you go: EAV, which runs the Circumvesuviana, started a new timetable on 17 October 2026. It says a train runs every 30 minutes to Sorrento. Trenitalia also lists works on the slow Rome–Naples line via Cassino. The fast line is a separate route.

Not ready to book? Our Rome-Naples train guide walks you through the trains and the local line to the ruins.

Prefer to drive yourself? Pick up a car at the airport, not in the center. Much of central Rome is closed to private cars on weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tips for a Pompeii day trip

  1. Know your time on site

The Pompeii-only day gives you a guided tour and free time. The coast trips spend more of the day on the road.

  2. Pompeii in the heat

Some sites lack shade, says the Positano trip’s listing. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, above all in summer.

  3. If your plans change

All five picks offer free cancellation. Check the deadline on each listing before you book.

  4. Bring ID for teens

Under-18s may be asked for an ID card at the entrance, say two listings.

  5. Wear good shoes

There is a fair amount of walking on old stone streets, says the Positano trip’s listing.
