Paris-Rome Train: Change in Milan, One Day
The Paris-Rome train trip works in one day with a change in Milan, because Trenitalia's high-speed Frecciarossa runs from Paris to Milan and on from Milan to Rome. We found no single train from Paris to Rome on the official pages, so you ride two trains and add the change time. This guide gives the times, the other cities that connect the same way and the booking steps.
Step 1: Take the first leg of the Paris-Rome train
The Paris-Rome train trip starts with Trenitalia's Frecciarossa from Paris to Milan. Trenitalia lists four daily links between Milan and Paris, via Turin and Lyon.
Only one of the Paris departures leaves time to reach Rome the same day. The 7:30 train arrives in Milan at 14:07. The 15:18 train arrives at 22:07, so you would reach Rome the next day.
| Paris departure | Milan arrival | Ride time |
|---|---|---|
| 7:30 | 14:07 | 6 h 37 min |
| 15:18 | 22:07 | 6 h 49 min |
The train stops in Lyon, Chambéry, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, Modane, Oulx and Turin. Trenitalia says the tickets between Lyon and Modane are not on sale, so buy the whole trip from Paris.
Trenitalia also warns that maintenance works can change or suspend the service. Its page listed a suspension from 12 September to 9 October. Check your travel date before you plan anything else.
| Step | What to do | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ride the 7:30 Paris to Milan train | Planned works can suspend the service |
| 2 | Change in Milan for Rome | 2 h 50 min at best, plus the change |
| 3 | Check your own city | Only some cities have an official page |
| 4 | Book both legs | Fares show only after a date search |
| 5 | Plan your first evening | You arrive after about 17:00 |
Step 2: Change in Milan for the train to Rome
The second leg is a normal Italian high-speed ride. Trenitalia says the Frecciarossa takes you from Milan to Rome in as little as 2 hours 50 minutes. It lists about 100 connections a day.
A one-day trip is possible. The riding time is 6 hours 37 minutes plus 2 hours 50 minutes, which is 9 hours 27 minutes. The change in Milan comes on top, and Trenitalia prints no change time. With the 30 minutes we suggest, the day adds up to about 9 hours 57 minutes, and with an hour in Milan to about 10 hours 27 minutes. Arriving in Rome before about 17:00 is not possible on this route.
Key Takeaway From Paris, the 7:30 Frecciarossa reaches Milan at 14:07, and the Milan to Rome leg takes 2 hours 50 minutes at best. That is 9 hours 27 minutes on the train before you count the change.
Book both legs in one purchase if the site offers it. Then a late first train does not leave you with a ticket you cannot use. Check which Rome station your ticket ends at before you book a hotel.
Step 3: Check the other cities that connect to Rome
Paris is not the only starting point, and the answer changes by city. Trenitalia's pages cover some of them and say nothing about others, so the table says what each page shows.
| From | What the official pages show | Route to Rome |
|---|---|---|
| Paris | Frecciarossa to Milan, 4 daily links | Change in Milan |
| Zurich | 26 Eurocity trains a day to and from Milan | Change in Milan |
| Basel | 10 Eurocity trains to and from Milan on weekdays | Change in Milan |
| Frankfurt | 1 daily Eurocity from Milan, via Zurich and Basel | Change in Milan |
| Barcelona, London, Munich, Nice | No official page read | Not stated here |
Trenitalia's Eurocity page says Zurich has 26 Eurocity trains a day to and from Milan. Frankfurt has one direct Eurocity a day from Milan, with stops in Zurich and Basel. For Zurich, Basel and Frankfurt, Milan is again the place you change for Rome.
We could not read an official timetable for Barcelona, London, Munich or Nice to Rome. We give no times for them. Trenitalia's Eurocity page for Germany mentions an Italy-Germany Eurocity to Munich only in its fare notes, with no timetable. The Zurich page gives train counts, not journey times, and Trenitalia's pages do not cover London. Use the Trenitalia journey planner and expect at least one change.
Pro Tip Search for "Milan" as your destination first, then search Milan to Rome for the same day. If the two results join up with a comfortable gap, buy both.
Step 4: Book the tickets and check the price
You buy the tickets on the Trenitalia site or app, the same place that lists the trains. Trenitalia's pages print no fares. The price appears only when you enter a date, and it depends on the train.
Trenitalia says a Frecciarossa has several service levels, from Standard to Executive. On the Paris-Milan train, Wi-Fi and the FrecciaPlay entertainment library are on board. Standard is the lowest level.
Do not rely on a price you saw in an article. Search your real date, compare the two legs and the total, and keep the change time at 30 minutes or more. A delayed first train on a separate ticket can cost you the second ticket.
Step 5: Plan your first evening and your first full day
The first evening is the one to keep light. Tour or on your own? Both are optional. A guide helps most where the story is hard to follow alone, such as the Colosseum, and the only price comparison we can make is the Colosseum one further down. You reach Rome in the late afternoon at the earliest, and probably after dinner time on a slow day.
A night walk asks little of you. The small-group night walking tour is run by Global Experiences by Carpe Diem Tours Group. The walk lasts 2.5 hours and is from €25 per person, rated 4.8 from 1,053 reviews. The listing shows free cancellation. It is not suitable for wheelchair users. The listing has two meeting points, and which one you get depends on the option you select, so pick the option first and read the point on the GetYourGuide page. It lists no group size. Entry to any attractions is not included, and the walk passes the sights at night rather than going inside. Check that the start time suits a late arrival.

For the next morning, the Colosseum arena floor, Forum and Palatine tour is run by Ivo Tours. The tour lasts 2.5 to 3 hours and is from €39 per person, rated 4.5 from 29,538 reviews. It meets at Via delle Terme di Tito 93 and offers private or small groups. It is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users. Food and drinks, transfers and access to the underground floor are not included. To go on your own, the Colosseum's own site sells a 24-hour ticket for €18 full, and the booked Colosseum time cannot be changed. The tour costs more than that ticket. The guided tour costs €21 more than the €18 ticket. The ticket page and the listing do not describe the same visit, and we have not compared exactly what each includes. After a tiring journey, a guide spares you the planning. For your own pace, buy the ticket and skip the guide.
If you want dinner instead of a climb, the Trastevere and Campo de' Fiori street food walk is run by Hili srl. The walk lasts 2.5 hours and is from €44 per person, rated 4.9 from 4,720 reviews. The listing shows free cancellation. It meets at the fountain on Piazza San Simeone, off Vicolo di S. Simeone, and lists no group size. Food is included but drinks are not, and it is not suitable for vegans or people with gluten intolerance.

Your legs may be stiff after nine hours on a train. Things to Do in Rome's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 28 bike and e-bike tours, from €20. For a wider choice of walks, night tours and private guides, see our Rome guide tours.
In the centre you do not need a Rome car rental, because our public transport guide covers the metro, buses and tickets from the station to your bed. If you stay near the station, the Hotel Domus Praetoria and the Camplus Hotel Roma Centro are both in the Termini area. For a quieter base, the Nerva Boutique Hotel is in Monti, and our where to stay in Rome guide compares the areas.
A long journey is easier to enjoy when the first evening asks nothing of you.
When the train is the wrong choice
The train is the wrong choice if you cannot spend a full day travelling. The riding alone is 9 hours 27 minutes, and the change comes on top. Trenitalia also warns of planned works on the Paris-Milan line, so a fixed date has some risk.
When a day on the train is too much, split the trip with a night in Milan and ride to Rome the next morning. If you are already in Italy and heading the other way, our Rome to Venice train guide shows how a high-speed ride from Rome works.
Your first two days after the long ride
For the evening you arrive, a 2.5-hour small-group night walking tour is from €25. The next morning, a Colosseum, Forum and Palatine guided tour of 2.5 to 3 hours is from €39. Both are optional: Step 5 says what each tour gives you, what the Colosseum costs on your own, and what each listing says about meeting points, group size and what is not included.
